traveling museum makes first stop
Students from my History of Museums and Collecting visited McLean Middle School on April 12, 2016 in an effort to introduce a young audience to history, rare books, and preservation.
Four teams of TCU students used a small collection of World War I-II diaries, and a set of rare books to discuss the role of primary sources in shaping our understanding of the past. Presentations touched on Nazi Youth, the history of bookmaking, and journals across time. Aside from learning about different aspects of history and objects, over one hundred McLean students got to build a Chinese four-hole manuscript, participate in a scavenger hunt, and prepare a series of diary entries from the perspective of a person living during the World War II era.
An exercise of social entrepreneurship supported by the Coleman Foundation, the Traveling Museum seeks to bring history to K-12 classrooms through the use of historic artifacts.
